2013 Sunset-Moonrise Lake Paddles
(This text is adapted from an article by Ernie Benoit in the
Fall 2013 issue of the Webster Lake Association Newsletter)
The Webster Lake Association sponsored three full moon
paddles on 7/21/13, 8/20/13 and 9/20/13.
All were organized and run by Ernie Benoit.
The group gathered at Point Breeze Marina at 6:00PM.
A half hour or so before sunset,
the kayaks and canoes were launched. Most of the paddlers came
overland, trucking their boats to the site, but quite a
few people paddled to Point Breeze to
meet the group. The paddlers headed out into Middle Pond taking a
different route for each paddle.
On the first paddle, the group circled out around Goat Island, back over Tom’s Bank and around Strip Island. As the group paddled by Goat Island, one of the Bald Eagles flew out and over in a majestic flight.
Each subsequent paddle was to a different part of Middle Pond. Each one ended up near Goat Island to view the spectacular sunsets and moonrises. The moon was ever so bright after the sun went down.
All events had a very good turnout, with over 40 boats in July and August and over 30 boats in September. Ray and Jean Travis followed the group in their pontoon boat as a safety precaution. No problems arose, but many thanks to Ray and Jean and a host of others who helped get things going and finishing safely.
In the future, Ernie plans to create a list of the email addresses of all those who attended and use it to send out invitations for future paddles. The invitations to the paddles were advertised in the local papers and sent to the French River Connection and The Last Green Valley. All were welcome to attend, both WLA members and non-members. If you would like to be on the email list for future paddles, send a note to Ernie Benoit
